Did Jesus give up his life to bind Satan?
Question: Did Jesus give up his life to bind Satan?
Response: There are two Greek words that are translated as “life.”
- Psyche, which is also translated “soul” or “self.”
- Zoe, which is always translated “life.” Scripture says the “spirit is life.”
I think Jesus gave up his psyche, but he is the life (Zoe).
The book of Hebrews talks about the power of his indestructible life (Zoe).
Jesus’ psyche died on the cross as he sacrificed it to the Father.
But Jesus also surrendered his Spirit as he did.
Some of the early church fathers spoke of Satan as a giant fish that swallowed Jesus, like the whale swallowed Jonah (Scripture refers to his stomach as sheol/hades or “hell”). So, at the cross Satan swallowed the indestructible life, and “hell” could not stomach his presence. And so, Jesus broke the gates of hades from the inside out. It’s such a cool picture! Remember in Men in Black, when the giant bug swallowed Tommy Lee Jones and then blew up? That’s the idea. So, Jesus descends into hades, breaks the doors from the inside out, and liberates all who had been held captive by the evil one’s lies. He loses his “psyche” (that earthly container), and God raises him in a new psyche, which is actually all the psyches of humanity in one psyche, the Body of Christ. This is often called the “recapitulation theory of the atonement.” It’s described in Ephesians 1:10-11. The word translated “united” means “to bring together under one head.”
