Summary

“The one who is coming will baptize with Holy Spirit and Fire,” says John. Jesus is baptized, the Spirit descends and the Father speaks: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” The Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness and the Devil says, “If … you are the Son of God…” Jesus trusts the word of His Father and so resists an entire world of temptation. It is the Spirit of Jesus within us that cries “Abba Father.” He is the pillar of fire that burns away our chaff. And He himself is the wheat. He is eternal blessing that cannot be earned. And he burns away the lie that made us think we could.
